These clandestine spots are known as speakeasies, which first emerged during Prohibition a century ago and are now enjoying a revival thanks to their clever cocktails, hidden entryways, and historic ambiance. 2Fog’s Pub in Howell is a modern take on the classic speakeasy, complete with a menu of carefully-crafted craft cocktails and a low-lit atmosphere to boot. The pub is located in a building that was built in 1915, but was shuttered for 20 years before being painstakingly restored to its original glory. Serial Prohibition speakeasy owner Cliff Bell would be proud of this revitalization success story.

The Last Word is one of the most popular hidden bars in Ann Arbor, but it can be hard to spot. A red light and a plaque with “The LW” are the only indication that a hidden bar is behind the door on the corner of West Huron Street and 1st Avenue. The drink menu is broken up into chapters that ascend from lighter cocktails to nightcaps, and there’s a good selection of absinthe to help you get into the spirit of things.

While this spot isn’t quite as secretive as some of the others on this list (you can find it by entering through a nondescript door in Parker’s Alley), it’s certainly no less impressive. The space is a perfumery by day, but becomes a cocktail bar at night, and it pairs every drink with a signature scent from its sister company, Smufato.
